Provided a float plan was received prior to departure, Passage Guardian monitors a vessel's progress from departure through until a notification of safe arrival has been received.
If the required captain's daily welfare report is not received, Passage Guardian commences the missed check in procedure below.
I make an assessment as to whether the vessel may be in trouble or not.
I consider a lot of factors when making this assessment including whether the vessel is single handed, weather conditions at the time and predicted for the next 24 hours, and data included in the previous daily welfare report.
If I have lost all communication with the vessel, but I observe the track on satellite AIS is as expected, it is unlikely I will take any action.
If I suspect the vessel may be in difficulty or will be soon, then I will contact the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) for the Search & Rescue Region (SRR) being transited, advising there has been a missed a check in.
I provide RCC with the float plan filed on departure. RCC will decide what action (if any) to take next.
